A key objective of the GASS (Green AI for Sustainable Shipping) project is to ensure that advanced optimisation and weather routing capabilities can be easily accessed and used by both onboard crews and shore-based operators. Deliverable D3.4 focuses on the development of the User Interface (UI), making the results from the project's research work practical, intuitive, and operationally relevant.
Led by NAVTOR (NVT) with contributions from Simula Research Laboratory (SRL), Task 3.4 (M12-M30) has developed user interface concepts that integrate the project's Weather Routing and Optimisation Service (WROS), which is currently being tested and used for validation. The goal is to integrate into NAVTOR's commercial voyage planning platform, NavStation. This integration allows navigators to access route optimisation information within familiar operational workflows, reducing complexity and supporting informed decision-making at sea.
In addition to onboard applications, relevant outputs from Work Package 1 and Work Package 2 are available for NavFleet, NAVTOR's fleet management portal. This tool enables shore-side personnel to access voyage optimisation insights, supporting collaboration between vessel crews and fleet operators in achieving safer, more efficient, and more sustainable voyages.
The user-centred design approach adopted in GASS ensures that the sophisticated AI-based models and optimisation services developed within the project are translated into actionable information that can be effectively used in real-world operations. By embedding these capabilities into existing commercial solutions, GASS is helping bridge the gap between advanced research and everyday maritime practice.
A proof-of-concept demonstration of the WROS User Interface has been developed for validating the weather routing algorithms and can be viewed in the accompanying project video, illustrating how optimisation recommendations and voyage planning support can be seamlessly integrated into maritime navigation and fleet management environments. It is already possible to import an RTZ file with the weather-optimised route into NavStation.
Through Deliverable D3.4, GASS takes another important step towards delivering practical digital tools that contribute to safer operations, reduced emissions, and more sustainable shipping.
