In 2025, North Sea Container Line (NCL) became a supporting partner in the GASS project —Green AI for Sustainable Shipping. This collaboration aims to leverage advanced data collection for machine learning to optimise voyages, reduce emissions, and enhance operational efficiency across diverse vessel types.
Why NCL Matters for GASS
The GASS project relies on data from multiple trading segments and vessel types to build robust digital twins capable of simulating vessel performance under varying conditions. While early partners already are providing valuable data, expanding to short-sea container shipping strengthens the project’s ability to address different operational profiles and environmental challenges.
Comment from NCL
“Data-driven innovation is key to reducing emissions and increasing efficiency. By supporting partner in GASS and sharing data from our fleet, we show our commitment to a cleaner maritime future.” - Kenneth Johanson, Chief Technical Officer, NCL
Installation Milestone on NCL Vestland
In May and July 2025, ScanReach and NAVTOR teams boarded NCL Vestland to survey and install equipment:
MRU (Motion Reference Unit) for roll, pitch, and heave data
OWC (Onboard Wireless Connectivity) for seamless data transmission
NavBox Advance for integrated data collection and API access
The equipment is active and delivering data.
Data Sharing
With noon reports data and the hardware in place, NAVTOR will retrieve data through secure APIs and make it available for Simula Research Laboratory, enabling advanced machine learning models to optimise voyages and reduce fuel consumption. This data will feed into the GASS digital twin, supporting predictive analytics for sustainable operations.
NCL’s participation underscores the industry’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. By sharing operational data and embracing cutting-edge technology, NCL is helping pave the way for a greener future in maritime transport.
