NAVTOR Leads the Change in Green Maritime Innovation with the GASS Project

23. sep. 2025

In a bold stride toward sustainable maritime operations, NAVTOR has taken the helm of "Green AI for Sustainable Shipping" (GASS). Backed by a 44 million NOK grant from the Norwegian Government’s Green Platform Initiative, the project aims to revolutionise energy efficiency in the maritime shipping industry through cutting-edge artificial intelligence.

A Vision for Greener Seas

NAVTOR, a global leader in digital maritime solutions, is spearheading the GASS project alongside six other prominent Norwegian partners: Grieg Star AS, Maritime CleanTech, Scandinavian Reach Technologies AS, Simula Research Laboratory AS, SinOceanic Shipping AS, and Sustainable Energy AS. Together, they are developing AI-enhanced technologies designed to optimise vessel energy usage, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and support compliance with evolving environmental regulations.

NAVTOR is a world-leading maritime technology company, providing e-Navigation, performance and smart shipping solutions to more than 18,000 vessels worldwide.

The Role of AI and Digital Twins

At the heart of the GASS project is the integration of AI and digital twin technology. Together with Simula Research Laboratory, NAVTOR is leveraging its expertise to create a digital ecosystem that mirrors real-time vessel operations. This system will analyse vast datasets—including AIS and performance logs—to predict fuel consumption, detect anomalies, and suggest optimal routing and operational strategies.

Bjørn Åge Hjøllo, Chief Sustainability Officer at NAVTOR, emphasised the transformative potential of the project: “We incorporate a great amount of data from vessels and combine these with a digital twin to develop services that can monitor, analyse, and optimise fuel consumption.”

A National Effort for Global Impact

The GASS project is one of nine initiatives under the Green Platform scheme, which aims to accelerate Norway’s green transition. When the funding was awarded, former Minister of Trade and Industry Jan Christian Vestre highlighted the importance of such projects in achieving national climate goals and fostering sustainable business growth. https://www.forskningsradet.no/nyheter/2023/573-millioner-kroner-til-gronne-omstillingsprosjekter/

The GASS project partners not only reinforce their commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship but also position Norway as a global frontrunner in maritime sustainability.

What drives NAVTOR’s innovation?

Involvement in innovative projects, such as GASS, Green Corridor, DYNAPORT, FUSE, MarTrans, makes industry partners collaborate with leading R&D institutions and Ship owners for improved solutions that aim to make life at sea safer and reduce environmental impact.

In the article written in collaboration between Norwegian Business Association in Singapore and NAVTOR it is stated that Bjørn Åge answers that question with a smile, “From day one we’ve been focused on making life easier for shipping companies.” Read full article: NAVTOR at SNIC 2025: The Beginning of a Greater Voyage
