As global shipping faces tougher regulations on its emissions, data from four Knutsen shuttle tankers will help propel the development of Green AI for Sustainable Shipping.
Knutsen Group is a Norwegian shipping company that plays a central role in transporting energy across the world’s oceans. The company operates a modern fleet of LNG carriers as well as advanced shuttle tankers that transport oil safely from offshore fields to land.
As a supporting partner in GASS, Knutsen will share historical and current noon reports and sensor data from four vessels operating in the North Sea and South America: Tove Knutsen, Frida Knutsen, Sindre Knutsen and Synnøve Knutsen.
“We are thrilled to have Knutsen onboard. Together with data from our other ship-owning partners, this will further strengthen the GASS project in building new data-driven solutions for optimising fuel use under various real-world conditions,” says Bjørn Åge Hjøllo, Chief Sustainable Officer at NAVTOR.

Eager to Shape a Cleaner Future
With decades of experience, Knutsen has built a reputation as a reliable partner for international energy companies, combining technical expertise with a strong focus on safety and operational quality. At the same time, the company emphasises long-term sustainability as a guiding principle in its work.
By working closely with customers, partners, and international stakeholders, the Group seeks to balance the world’s growing need for energy with the responsibility to protect the environment and support the transition toward greener shipping.
“We wanted to contribute to the GASS project because we at Knutsen believe that digitalisation and artificial intelligence are important tools for reducing the carbon footprint of the maritime industry,” says Tom Erik Rimmereide, Data Analytics Manager at Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers AS.

Rimmereide continues,“by sharing our data and experience, we aim to support the industry’s development and ensure that the Knutsen Group remains at the forefront of the digital future.”
Vessel Data Crucial to Developing New Solutions
Green AI for Sustainable Shipping (GASS) takes a data-driven approach to shipping decarbonisation. By leveraging massive data sources and advanced AI technology to optimise voyages and vessel performance, the project aims to demonstrate emission savings of up to 20 percent.
Grieg Star and SinOceanic Shipping have been part of the GASS project since its inception and are sharing valuable data from their fleets of open-hatch bulk carriers and container vessels, respectively. With Knutsen onboard as a new supporting partner, the project’s foundation will be broadened with data from the important tanker segment.
Two further shipping companies, to be announced in due time, have also signed data sharing agreements in support of the GASS project.
The data will be used by Simula to train the new digital twin and machine learning algorithms that can predict optimal fuel use under different real-world conditions. These will form the backbone of the new commercial services to be launched by NAVTOR, helping shipowners save fuel costs and comply with tightening climate regulations in the years ahead.
